Dr. Mahmoud Momtaz said that the cooperation protocol comes in line with the keenness to implement the work strategy (2021-2025) of the Authority, one of whose principles is to spread the culture of competition among many categories. These categories include the academic community, research support and academic life regarding competition protection to support the labour market. This entails preparing trained cadres and creating a new generation that is qualified and familiar with the policies and mechanisms of competition protection. In addition, it works on increasing the research in the field of competition in Egypt which contributes to the advancement of the performance of the Egyptian economy and the achievement of sustainable development.
Professor Mohamed Loutfi praised the cooperation with the Egyptian Competition Authority emphasising the University’s keenness to provide the best education quality for its students and to contribute to the spread of legal awareness and the graduation of generations of lawyers who maintain the highest standards of quality and legal culture. He pointed out that the University has a Legal Training Centre which aims to develop the skills of those who work and even those who do not work in the legal profession by providing them with training programmes in all areas of legal specialisation.
Whereas Professor Hassan Abdelhamid highlighted that the goal of the partnership between the University represented by the Faculty of Law and the Egyptian Competition Authority is to provide practical legal training for the students of the Faculty to primarily qualify them to practise law and provide graduates in connection to the practical legal reality. He praised the role of the Egyptian Competition Authority in spreading and strengthening the culture of competition between the academic community in addition to the importance of the Authority and its role in controlling markets in various sectors. He highlighted that this cooperation comes within a series of agreements made by the Faculty of Law at the British University with many legal and judicial institutions. This ensures the achievement of the Faculty’s vision in promoting applied education and providing more training opportunities for students to qualify them for the competitive labour market.
Following the protocol signing ceremony, a lecture was addressed to the Faculty’s students in which Dr. Mahmoud Momtaz spoke about the Egyptian Competition Authority regarding its importance, work strategy (2021-2025), and the relationship between the competition protection law and the economy. He also tackled the crimes stipulated in the law such as, the abuse of the dominant position, vertical and horizontal agreements restricting competition, exemption, mergers and acquisitions’ policies within the law, competition protection law enforcement and market reform, as well as the dissemination of competition protection policies.
It is worth noting that the Authority is working on signing a set of cooperation protocols with several Egyptian public and private universities; the latest of which was Alexandria University to spread the culture of competition within the academic community which could be achieved through workshops and various training courses or through cooperation protocols to render the Authority’s publications, research, and library available to students studying law and economics, to qualify them, and inform them of all that is new in the field of competition policies.
