Opening of Capacity Building Programme
The COP29 Simulation Model's Capacity Building Programme officially commenced on 28 July 2024, with an inspiring online launch event that set the stage for an intensive two-week educational journey. This student-led innovative programme, which represents a collaborative effort between Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ»ÆÆ¬, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Egypt, and ADA University in Azerbaijan, is dedicated to skilling and upskilling youth on climate literacy, nurturing youth-led climate initiatives, and honing their skills in diplomacy, debate, and conflict resolution.
The opening ceremony featured keynote addresses from key figures in the field. The stirring opening address from Ms. Leyla Hasanova, COP29 Youth Climate Champion and Chairperson of NAM Youth, was designed to motivate and energise the participants, setting an optimistic tone for the programme.
Dr. Sarah Elkhishin, Director of Strategy Development and Head of the COP Simulation Model at Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ»ÆÆ¬, and Dr. Abeer Shakweer, Assistant Resident Representative at UNDP Egypt, offered welcoming remarks that highlighted the programme's importance and objectives. Their speeches underscored the programme’s role in preparing participants to tackle global climate challenges with informed and strategic approaches.
Dr. Hala Hattab, Professor of Entrepreneurship and Innovation and Coordinator of the Capacity Building Programme, provided an in-depth overview of the programme's structure and goals. Her detailed explanation aimed to equip participants with a clear understanding of what to expect and how to maximise their learning experience.
Overall, the Capacity Building Programme aims to empower the next generation of climate leaders with the essential knowledge and skills needed to drive meaningful and impactful change over the course of the COP29 Simulation Model and COP29.
