The British University in COP28
Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ»ÆÆ¬ was honoured to participate in COP28 at Expo City-Dubai, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme and Zayed University. Our University contributed to COP28 with three thought-provoking sessions in the Egypt Pavilion (Blue Zone), the League of Arab States Pavilion (Blue Zone) and the Greening Education Hub (Green Zone).
The first session, entitled "COP28 Simulation Outcomes and Solutions for Climate Action," took place at the Egypt Pavilion, Blue Zone, where students who participated in the COP Simulation in Cairo presented their recommendations for Climate Action initiatives. High-profile panellists at the session were HE Professor Ashraf Sobhi, Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr Ali Abou Sena, Executive Director of the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency, Professor Mohamed Loutfi, President and Vice-Chancellor of Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ»ÆÆ¬, Mr Alessandro Fracassetti, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Ambassador Hesham Badr, Assistant Minister for Strategic Partnership, Ministry of Planning and Economic Development.
The second session, “Our Future Our Voice: Youth Driving Climate Action," took place at the League of Arab States Pavilion in the Blue Zone. The session tackled the different ways in which youths can be active participants in Climate Action initiatives. It included high-profile panellists: HE Professor Ashraf Sobhi, Minister of Youth and Sports, HE Professor Mahmoud Mohieldin, the UN Climate Change High-Level Champion, Professor Mohamed Loutfi, President and Vice-Chancellor of Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ»ÆÆ¬, Mr Alessandro Fracassetti, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and Ambassador Nada El Agizy, Director of Sustainable Development and International Cooperation at the League of Arab States.
The third and concluding session, “Empowering Youth to Become Climate Action Change Agents: The COP Simulation Unique Experience,” took place at UNESCO * UAE Ministry of Higher Education in the Green Zone. During the final session, our University presented several recommendations formulated by students participating in the COP28 Simulation Model: top among these is the need to mobilise finance for adaptation in societies most vulnerable to Climate Change. The session was attended by distinguished panellists Professor Mohamed Loutfi, President and Vice-Chancellor of Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ»ÆÆ¬, Professor John Latham, CEO and Vice-Chancellor of Coventry University, Dr Ehab Shalaby, Chairman of D-Carbon Global for Sustainability and Climate Change Solutions, Professor Stuart Bannerman, Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor International, London South Bank University, and Professor Paul J Hopkinson, Dean of the College of Interdisciplinary Studies of Zayed University.
It is worth noting that all three enlightening sessions were moderated by Dr Sarah El-Khishin, Head of the COP Simulation Model and Head of Strategy Development, Dr Abeer Shakweer, Assistant Resident Representative, UNDP - Egypt, and Dr Suzanna Al-Masah, Director of the Sustainability Programme at Zayed University.
