Legal & Statue Interpretation Workshop

It has been our immense pleasure at the Faculty of Law at the British University in Egypt organising a workshop on Legal and Statute Interpretation for our Degree Year Two students.

This Workshop is part of a series of workshops run by the Faculty in collaboration with renowned practitioners, from both the judiciary and law firms, with the aim of cultivating in our students the various practical legal skills that are closely connected to the academic modules taught across all cohorts. It also endeavours to introduce our students to the practicalities of the different areas of legal practice.

The Legal and Statute Workshop, for instance, provided our students with deeper understanding of the different legal interpretation methodologies and how to apply them across numerous areas of law, such as Criminal Procedures, Private International Law, and Public International Law. During these sessions, our students worked in groups on real cases – under the supervision of two distinguished judges – and learned how to utilise the legal and statute interpretation techniques in formulating solid legal reasoning and building legal arguments and counter-arguments mirroring what real judges do when working on real cases.

This Workshop was delivered by Judge Ahmed Abdelazim and Judge Dr Abdelmohsen Shiha (Judges at the Egyptian State Council).

Judge Ahmed Abdelazim is a legal professional with diverse experience across the legal field as an attorney, lecturer, public prosecutor, State Council judge, and legal advisor. Judge Ahmed holds an LLM from Indiana University in USA in addition to numerous experience in legal training in Austria, Germany, Netherlands, Greece, and France. He is currently a Legal Counsel at the Ministerial Committee for the Settlement of Investment Contracts Disputes, and the Legal Councel for the Head of the Egyptian Exchange.

Judge Dr Abdelmohsen Sheha is a pre-trial Judge at the Egyptian State Council and a former student of the ENA (French National School of Public Administration). Judge Dr Sheha obtained his Ph.D. in public comparative law (Regulatory Economics, sp. Telecoms laws and policies) from the Université de Strasbourg (France). He is currently a legal advisor at the Ministry of Trade and Industry.
